True Open Source
F/LOSS (Free/Libre Open Source Software).
Seath Solutions' work is based on true Open Source, better described
as Free (or Libre) Open Source Software. This is intended to give all
of the rights that you, as an end user, might need.
Some proprietary software vendors will sell you a restricted licence
to their software source code, but this doesn't meet the definition of
the Four Freedoms of true Open Source, to:
- run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0).
- study how the program works, and adapt it to your needs (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
- redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).
- improve
the program, and release your improvements to the public, so that the
whole community benefits (freedom 3). Access to the source code is a
precondition for this.
Open Source enterprise software is generally available under one or
other of three licence families, which have the same freedoms for end
users (but different implications for distributors):
- the GNU General Public License
- the Apache license
- the BSD-style license.
